About Paper Wasps

Paper wasps are slender, long-legged wasps measuring 5/8 to 3/4 inch long with brown bodies and yellow or reddish markings. They build distinctive open-comb paper nests that resemble upside-down umbrellas. These nests are often found hanging from eaves, porch ceilings, door frames, or tree branches. Unlike yellow jackets, their nests are not enclosed in a paper envelope. Colonies typically contain 15-200 wasps. They're less aggressive than yellow jackets but will defend their nest vigorously. They're beneficial insects that prey on caterpillars and other pests.

Identification

Slender waist. Long legs that dangle in flight. Brown with yellow or reddish-orange markings. 5/8 to 3/4 inch long. Open paper nests visible.

Signs of Infestation

Open honeycomb-style paper nests under eaves or overhangs. Wasps flying around nest entrances. Increased wasp activity near buildings. Wasp sightings in spring (queens searching for nest sites).

Health & Safety Risks

Paper wasp stings are painful and can cause severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) in sensitive individuals. Multiple stings can cause toxic reactions. Stings near eyes, mouth, or throat are particularly dangerous. Unlike bees, wasps can sting multiple times.

Prevention Tips

Seal cracks and crevices. Remove old nests in late fall/winter. Install screens on vents. Keep trash covered. Remove food sources. Knock down new nests in early spring. Avoid wearing sweet perfumes outdoors.
