About Cat Fleas

Cat fleas are the most common flea species affecting both cats and dogs. Adults are tiny (1/16 to 1/8 inch), dark brown to black, with flattened bodies that allow them to move easily through fur. They have powerful hind legs for jumping up to 12 inches vertically. Fleas require blood meals and can bite humans if pet hosts aren't available. Females lay 40-50 eggs daily that fall off the host into carpets, bedding, and furniture. Eggs hatch into larvae that feed on organic debris. Complete life cycle takes 2-3 weeks under optimal conditions. Adult fleas can survive months without feeding.

Identification

Very small (1/16 to 1/8 inch). Dark brown to black. Flattened side-to-side. No wings. Powerful hind legs for jumping. Backward-facing bristles. Hard body.

Health & Safety Risks

Flea bites cause itchy welts and can lead to secondary infections from scratching. Some people are allergic to flea saliva. Fleas can transmit diseases including murine typhus and plague. Heavy infestations can cause anemia in pets. Tapeworms spread through flea ingestion.

Prevention Tips

Treat all pets with vet-approved flea control. Vacuum carpets and furniture frequently. Wash pet bedding weekly in hot water. Keep grass cut short. Treat outdoor areas where pets rest. Check pets after outdoor activities. Use flea combs regularly.
