About German Cockroach

German cockroaches are the most common and problematic indoor cockroach species. Adults measure 1/2 to 5/8 inch long and are light brown with two distinctive dark parallel stripes running from head to wings. They cannot survive outdoors in most climates and thrive in warm, humid environments near food, moisture, and warmth - making kitchens and bathrooms ideal. Females carry egg cases containing 30-40 eggs until just before hatching. A single female can produce 300+ offspring annually. They're prolific breeders and develop pesticide resistance quickly.

Identification

Light brown to tan color. 1/2 to 5/8 inch long. Two distinctive dark parallel stripes behind head. Long antennae. Six legs. Flat, oval body. Wings present but rarely flies.

Signs of Infestation

Live or dead roaches, especially at night. Dark specks or smears (fecal matter) in cabinets, drawers. Musty, oily odor in infested areas. Egg cases (tan, capsule-shaped) in hidden areas. Roaches scattering when lights turned on.

Health & Safety Risks

Cockroaches spread bacteria, pathogens, and parasites. Associated with Salmonella, E. coli, dysentery, and food poisoning. Droppings and shed skins trigger asthma and allergies, especially in children. Can cause severe allergic reactions.

Prevention Tips

Eliminate food sources - keep kitchen spotless. Fix leaky faucets and pipes. Seal cracks and crevices with caulk. Remove clutter and hiding spots. Store food in sealed containers. Take garbage out regularly. Clean appliances thoroughly.
