About Odorous House Ants

Odorous house ants are tiny (1/16 to 1/8 inch) brown to black ants that get their name from the distinctive rotten coconut or blue cheese smell they emit when crushed. These ants form extremely large colonies with multiple queens, sometimes containing thousands of workers. They're highly adaptable and nest both indoors and outdoors. Their colonies can split into satellite colonies, making elimination challenging. They're attracted to sweet foods and moisture.

Identification

Very small brown to black ants (1/16 to 1/8 inch). Uneven, jagged thorax when viewed from side. Hidden node (hard to see from above). Emit strong rotten coconut smell when crushed.

Signs of Infestation

Trails of small ants leading to food sources. Ants in kitchen, bathroom, or near moisture. Sweet food items contaminated with ants. Multiple ant trails entering structure. Colonies visible under mulch or stones outdoors.

Health & Safety Risks

Odorous house ants are primarily a nuisance pest. They contaminate food but don't bite, sting, or transmit diseases. Large infestations can indicate moisture problems that may lead to other issues.

Prevention Tips

Keep kitchen clean and food sealed. Wipe up spills immediately. Fix water leaks and moisture issues. Seal entry points around pipes and wires. Remove yard debris and mulch near foundation. Trim vegetation touching house.
