About Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are among the largest ants found in homes, typically measuring 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length. Unlike termites, they don't eat wood but excavate it to create nesting galleries. These ants prefer moist, decaying wood but may also infest sound wood. Colonies can contain thousands of workers and may take 3-6 years to mature. They're most active at night and are often spotted traveling in trails between their nest and food sources.

Identification

Large black or dark brown ants (1/4 to 1/2 inch long). Single node on narrow waist. Heart-shaped head. Evenly rounded thorax when viewed from side. May have wings during mating season.

Signs of Infestation

Piles of wood shavings (frass) beneath wooden items. Faint rustling sounds in walls or woodwork. Large black ants trailing in and out of structures, especially at night. Hollow-sounding wood. Winged ants emerging from walls or ceilings.

Health & Safety Risks

While carpenter ants don't pose significant health risks, their wood-damaging activity can compromise structural integrity over time. They may bite if threatened but rarely cause medical issues.

Prevention Tips

Fix moisture problems and leaky pipes. Remove decaying wood and tree stumps near home. Trim tree branches touching the house. Seal cracks and crevices in foundation. Store firewood away from home. Eliminate food sources.
